Today’s Top Turkey Slayers Are Redefining Shotgun Design and Performance as the Ultimate Gobbler Killers

by Richard Baimbridge

Over the past few years, turkey hunting shotguns have seen some big improvements in ergonomics and performance, in addition to shifting trends in firepower preferences. The general trend as of late is towards smaller sub-gauge guns that are lighter, more maneuverable, with far less recoil — often with pistol grips and optic-ready set-ups that provide more of a rifle-like feel. If you haven’t tried one of these guns, they’re a real pleasure to shoot and a fresh approach to the turkey hunting experience.

Naturally though, some folks still prefer the punching power of a 12-guage and smooth pump-action loaders. So, of course, there are still plenty of options out there for longer-range turkey hunters, as well. But overall, it seems the trend as of late is taking gobblers up-close with lighter weapons. Still, when patterning your turkey gun, a good rule of thumb is to stick to 40 yards – and to spend at least a few hours patterning your shots with the same turkey loads that you intend to use out in the field, looking for a ratio of about 100 pellets inside a 10-inch circle.

It’s understandable why many turkey hunters overlook the importance of patterning their guns – they are, after all, shotguns. But keep in mind that turkey hunting is a whole different beast, and it’s just as important spending time patterning a turkey gun as it is sighting in a bow or rifle for deer season. In the end, no matter how great the gun you choose is, if it ain’t patterned, it probably ain’t gonna get the job done. To that end, adjustable optics are certainly an added advantage.

So, with that in mind, let’s look at 5 of the Best Turkey Guns out on the market this year, and what it is that makes them great.

Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 — a sub-gauge turkey slayer

1. Benelli Super Black Eagle 3

This gun is at the top of so many top turkey gun lists this year that I’m almost embarrassed to include it at all. But the fact is, it’s a spectacular gun, and on the cutting edge of modern sub-gauge turkey snipers at 28-gauge / 20-gauge models, each weighing in at just around 5½ pounds. The Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 has long been a favorite among turkey hunters, and the 2025 model takes it to the next level. This lightweight semi-automatic shotgun is renowned for its versatility, making it perfect for all types of terrains and weather conditions. The Inertia Driven system ensures reliable cycling of various loads, from light target loads to heavy turkey loads.

The 28-inch barrel provides excellent shot control, while the integrated choke system allows hunters to easily switch between different chokes for improved patterning. Additionally, with a comfortable stock design and improved recoil management, the Super Black Eagle 3 minimizes fatigue, making it easier to comfortably hunt for longer periods.

Mossberg 935 Magnum Turkey

2. Mossberg 935 Magnum Turkey

While the Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 might be at the top of many “best of 2025” lists, if I had to choose one personal favorite, it’d be the Mossberg 935 Magnum Turkey. Maybe that’s because I’m partial to Mossberg shotguns in general, and I enjoy the zing of a 12-gauge. But this sleek, 7-pound semi-auto certainly delivers outstanding performance for turkey hunters – and while the price definitely isn’t dirt cheap, you don’t have to sell the farm either, with an MSRP of around $1200.

It features a 3.5-inch chamber, allowing for a range of shotshell options, from standard to high-velocity loads. The 22-inch overbored vent rib barrel is designed with an extra-full choke, making it an excellent choice for long-distance shots — and an ideal set-up for consistent tight patterns. The dual gas-vent system also gives it a very smooth feel.

What sets the 935 apart is its ergonomic design, with a comfortable pistol-grip, thumb-operated safety, and an overall very balanced feel, making it easy to maneuver in challenging conditions.

Remington 870 SPS Turkey — If looks could kill

3. Remington 870 SPS Turkey

From the first glance at this gun, you can tell right away that it’s a serious contender for one of the top turkey slayers of the year. Its simple, clean and beautiful design already says pretty much everything you need to know. The Remington 870 Turkey model has been reimagined for 2025 with modern upgrades while maintaining its legendary performance. This pump-action shotgun is known for its rugged durability and simple, straightforward operation. The new 870 Turkey comes with a handsome 21-inch vent rib barrel that shoots both 2¾" and 3" shells.

The upgrade to an advanced recoil pad provides improved comfort while reducing flinch. It features a Ghillie camouflage finish and Truglo Headbanger Choke Tube.

Mossberg SA-28 Tactical Turkey — Magnum’s lethal little brother

4. Mossberg SA-28 Tactical Turkey

Another fine example of the sub-gauge trend in turkey guns is Mossberg’s sleek SA-28 Tactical Turkey. The sub-gauge autoloaders are lightweight, gas-operated, camo-covered in Mossy Oak Greenleaf with a 22-inch barrel. It features a comfortable and stable pistol grip, fiber optic front sight and adjustable Ghost Ring rear sight as well as a Picatinny rail for ease of adding optics, and comes equipped with an Extended Turkey choke tube. Of course, the main selling-point is the ultra-soft recoil of a 28-gauge that makes this gun an absolute joy to shoot. Keep in mind though that 28-gauge TSS ammo might not be the easiest thing in the world to find – but aside from that, it’s a gun definitely worthy of a space in your collection.

With a 22-inch barrel, it weighs in at just a hair under 6 pounds – making light, versatile and easy-to-carry. Chambered at 2¾ inches, it’s also reasonably affordable, with an MSRP just below a thousand bucks.

The Stoeger M3500 Predator/Turkey Gun

5. The Stoeger M3500 Predator Turkey Gun

The Stoeger M3500 Turkey Gun is a highly versatile semi-automatic shotgun with a pistol-grip design that has made waves in the turkey hunting community for both its value and reliability. With options from 2¾ to 3-inch and 3.5-inch chambers and Inertia Driven system, this shotgun is capable of cycling through a variety of loads seamlessly. The 24-inch barrel offers great accuracy and is fitted with an extended choke that allows for tight, consistent patterns.

In 2025, the M3500 comes with improved ergonomics, including a soft-touch finish on the stock for better grip in wet conditions. Its compatibility with both lead and non-toxic shot types makes it an ideal choice for hunters looking to explore new ammunition options. The Stoeger M3500 is an affordable option that doesn't sacrifice performance. Receiver comes in a beautiful Mossy Oak Overwatch camo finish that is clean and gorgeously-designed.

With so many great options on the table, there’s plenty of room for a modern turkey slayer in your collection. Whether it’s a sub-gauge or a 12-gauge, there’s lots to choose from — choose wisely and it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed.

Just remember to spend some quality time outside patterning your new shotgun — otherwise, the only compliments you’re likely to get this season will come from the turkeys that you missed.
